Two swimmers from St Ives Swimming Club (SISC) have competed in their first Junior East Region Long Course Championships against the very best of the UK.

Zahra Lonsdale, 12, and Bertie Titheridge, 12, both travelled to Luton Sports Village from May 13-14 to compete in the Long Course Championships against swimmers from Cambridgeshire, Bedfordshire, Hertfordshire, Norfolk, Suffolk and Essex.

Racing in an Olympic pool, both swam "very successfully", with Zahra finishing 13th in the 100 metre breaststroke and 12th in the 200 metre breaststroke against several other swimmers.

Bertie swam in both the 50 and 100 metres freestyle events, the first time he had swam a 100 in an Olympic pool.

He also swam "superbly", achieving lifetime best times and finishing 28th place in the 50 metre freestyle and 35th in the 100 metre freestyle.

A spokesperson for SISC said: "They were great swims by both 12-year-olds, which will hold them in great stead for their future competitive swimming journey.

"The whole Club is very proud of their achievements at their first Regional Championships."
