As the rugby season nears an end, plenty of rugby is still being played at St Ives RFC, with several players representing Cambridgeshire and the juniors celebrating trophy success.

St Ives under-12s travelled to play in the Northampton Saints Defender Premiership Rugby Cup on April 15 and came away with the plate trophy.

Having topped their group without conceding a try, running in victories over Wellingborough, Kettering, and Leighton Buzzard, the young Bulls lost to Ampthill in the Cup quarter-final.

This put them into the plate semi-final, where they dusted themselves down and defeated Hinckley, again without conceding a try.

They then ran out winners by three tries to zero in the plate final against Long Buckby.

A spokesperson for the Rugby Club said: "The under 12's have had a great season, playing attractive rugby and are keen to grow their numbers."

It was an excellent day for them, which was rounded off with a trip to watch Northampton v Saracens when they were paraded on the pitch with all the other teams at half-time."

County call-ups

Four St Ives first-team players recently got the chance to represent the club playing for Cambridgeshire RFU in the Eastern Counties Tri-Counties Cup.

Cambridgeshire defeated Norfolk 21-10 on March 15 and Suffolk 26-0 on March 22 to win the cup in an impressive showing.

Josh Dear, John Paxton, who captained the county side for the second season running, Matt Wood and Tom Woodrow were all part of the successful cup-winning side, helping the county win a back-to-back title for the first time.

Captain and fly-half John said: "Getting picked for your county is a real privilege, especially for the Tri counties cup.

"Following on from last year's tournament success, the feeling was that we had a really good platform to build on, which certainly came to fruition.

"What makes it even more special is having some of my closest St Ives players to do that with."

John and Matt have now been selected to represent Eastern Counties as a result of their performances.
