Pupils from secondary schools across Cambridgeshire, including in St Ives, Huntingdon and Sawtry, have tested their footballing skills in Years 7 and 8 futsal tournaments.

Schools were invited to enter two teams, one boy and one girl, and the event followed a round-robin format, with the team top of the group announced as the event winner.

UEFA describe Futsal as a 'FIFA-recognised form of small-sided indoor football (the word is a contraction of the Spanish 'fútbol sala'), and it is played with a smaller ball in teams of five.

Organised by Hunts School Sports Partnership, the tournament was held at One Leisure St Ives on June 23.

A spokesperson for HSSP said: "The day started with an exciting morning event with Sawtry Village Academy and Impington Village College getting off to a flying start.

"The quality of play proved to be high, with plenty of goals, tightly contested matches and nail-biting finishes."

Impington Village Academy won both the girl's and boy's morning tournaments, and eight more school teams took part in the afternoon tournaments, with St Ivo Academy girls' side reaming undefeated throughout.

In the boy's afternoon competition, St Peter's School defeated St Ivo on goal difference to determine the top spot after both sides could not be separated from the top.
