Bushmead and Histon and Impington Brook Primary Schools have stormed to victory in the Years 3 and 4 inter-district girl's football tournaments.

The Hunts School Sports Partnership (HSSP) and South Cambs School Sports Partnership, in partnership with the English Schools Football Association (ESFA), organised two girls football tournaments on May 19.

More than 200 girls from 20 schools across Cambridgeshire took part and were split across a morning and afternoon tournament.

Bushmead, St Neots, won the morning tournament by beating Swavesey Primary School in their final, with Histon and Impington triumphing in the afternoon tournament by defeating Cottenham in the only non-draw in that side of the competition.

Westfield Junior School 'A' team, from St Ives, placed third in the morning tournament and in the afternoon tournament, Holywell Cofe Primary School shared the third place honours with Alconbury after a draw.

Doug Finlayson, HSSP partnership manager and secretary for the Cambridgeshire Schools FA, said: "It was amazing to see so many different schools in attendance."

The tournaments looked to provide girls in Years 3 and 4 an opportunity to play matches against other schools that they wouldn't usually have the opportunity to play.

The tournament also aimed to provide all in attendance with a positive experience of an inter-school competition.

Each tournament started by splitting the teams into two pools, using a round-robin format, before progressing to placing matches against the equivalently placed schools from the other pool.

Doug added: "The event is also supported by Game On Girls Football Activators from Hinchingbrooke School, which has provided a positive link to the work that both myself and Claire McDonnell from South Cambs School Sports Partnership do as Barclays Girls Football School Partnership Strategic Leads.
