Now in its sixth year, this summer’s event will take place on May 20 at the town’s corn exchange, inspiring children to get creative and fall in love with reading.

As is tradition, the Book Jam is also holding its annual writing competition, which is open to youngsters in the following categories: Reception, Years 1 and 2, Years 3 and 4, and Years 5 and 6.

The premise is simple. The library has closed for the weekend and all the lights are out. But something is stirring on the shelves.

Children are asked to imagine their favourite characters in the library, who they meet, and what they get up to after dark.

Stories should be no longer than 750 words, and Reception entries are allowed to include pictures.

Prizes will be awarded for each category at the main event in May, with book tokens to the value of £40, £20 and £10 up for grabs.

As well as this, the day itself will be full of fun things for youngsters and families to do, including buying books, taking part in free workshops, and meeting authors for signing sessions.

Illustrators will also be on hand to show children how stories come to life, plus a colouring table, soft play area and plenty of snacks and drinks available too.

The event is organised by ACE – Friends of the St Ives Corn Exchange – and will run from 9.30am to 4.30pm with free admission.

The deadline for the competition is April 21, and entries must be submitted with your child’s name, year group, address and contact details to The St Ives Corn Exchange, The Pavement, The Old Riverport, St Ives, PE27 5AD.
