UPHOLDING the spirit of the World Shakespeare Festival, which began in April this year, Huntingdon theatre group Shakespeare at the George brings to life another acclaimed curtain raiser.

Each year the group performs one of the Bard’s most celebrated plays outside in the Jacobean Courtyard of the George Hotel in Huntingdon.

This year sees them grace the stage with one of Shakespeare’s earliest comedies and despite being first published in 1598, Love’s Labour’s Lost is a timeless piece which still amuses audiences over 400 years on.

The story centres around three princesses who insist their potential suitors prove their supposed love is not infatuation.

The men then decide to isolate themselves for three years to study books vowing not to keep the company of any women.

But when some beautiful women arrive on a diplomatic mission, the men immediately fail to keep their oaths.

The ladies discover the situation and the gentlemen realise where their true feelings lie.

The women then ban the men to a hermitage for a further year before they will associate with them.

The productions at The George are run by a group of trustees and the entire cast and crew are volunteers.

The group is also involved in a Royal Shakespeare Company Open Stages event where they will perform a scene from the play in Ipswich.

If successful, the scene will be performed at the RSC main theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon.

The Hunts Post has teamed up with The George to give away a pair of tickets to the performance on July 3.
