Last night (Wednesday) saw the launch of the new series of the Great British Bake Off and it included all the usual culinary drama.

There was a sprinkling of puns, a dusting of innuendoes and inevitably there had to be a soggy bottom...or a droopy one as it turned out.

This year’s contestants include a prison officer, a Lithuanian body-builder, a fireman, a student, and then there’s the trainee anaesthetist who likes injecting his cakes to make them more tasty!

In the first episode, screened on August 5, one contestant was told his Madeira cake tasted like water paper paste, another burst into tears when her Black Forest Gateaux collapsed to resemble a “mudslide” and Stu the musician, who seemed like a thoroughly nice chap, left the show after he failed to impress judges Paul Hollywood and Mary Berry.

The first task facing the 12 amateur bakers was to make a Madeira cake, which traditionally has to have a cracked top, cue lots of jokes from presenters Mel and Sue about showing cracks! The technical challenge was a walnut cake with frosted icing, which sounds straightforward enough, but the skill here is the size of your walnuts...and, according to Mr Hollywood, size definitely does matter.

The Showstopper was that old seventies favourite the Black Forest Gateaux, but this is Bake Off, so we knew to expect chocolate trees, but chocolate elephants was a bit of a surprise.

So, if you were inspired to bake after watching the show why not join our Hunts Post Bake Off challenge?

Each week we are asking readers to make the Showstopper bake and then send us a photograph. We will feature all the pics in a gallery on our website and there will be a prize for the one that we feel looks the most dramatic.

The Showstopper is a difficult challenge where the bakers are asked to showcase the depth of their skills and talents, so don’t hold back.

Once you have made your Showstopper (this week it is the Black Forest Gateaux) take a photograph and send it to us at The Hunts Post, 30 High Street, Huntingdon, PE29 3TB or e-mail: news@huntspost.co.uk. Include your name and tell us where you are from and you can add some details about your creation if you want to. All the photographs will appear in an online Great British Bake Off Showstopper gallery. We will give a prize to the one we deemed to be the most creative.
