This poignant play explores the catastrophic impact of the First World War.

Held at Waresley Village Hall, The Thankful Village tells the tale of one of the 52 communities in the country where all of the fathers, sons, brothers, and husbands came home after the conflict.

However, the quiet village of Thankful-in-the-Vale is by no means untouched by the atrocities on the continent.

As the memorial in the village square remains empty and unetched as the years pass, people start to wonder about the lives of those who came back to quiet domesticity after experiencing the horrors of warfare.

This is a story of hope, humour and humanity, about the men who went away, and the women left behind, and the eccentric twists and turns of daily life that led to them reuniting, for better or for worse, in the winter of 1918. The play focuses on the experiences of those whose fellow soldiers went bravely to their deaths in the name of their country.

Badapple Theatre Company is a touring group renowned for its innovative pieces, visiting the smallest of venues around the country as part of its ‘Theatre On Your Doorstep Programme’.

Despite the dark subject matter, the play has been written by Kate Bramley as a comedy-drama, capturing the humour at the heart of the villagers’ everyday lives.

Bramley trained at Hull University’s drama department and later worked as an associate director at Hull Truck Theatre. She has had a long directorial association with the theatre, where she has worked on a range of contemporary and classic shows, as well as youth theatre productions. She founded the company in 1998 when she wrote and directed Amy Johnson for a premiere at the Edinburgh Festival, followed by two national tours.

Expect an evening of powerful drama and remembrance in this remarkable stage show.
