Local musical and dramatic society, Vamps of St Neots, is presenting the hit West End and Broadway musical Avenue Q at the Priory Centre, St Neots, from April 12-14.
Most of the characters are puppets, but this is definitely not a children’s show. It is a mischievous and often raunchy look at the challenges young adults face as they try to make their way in the big city.
Avenue Q is the story of Princeton, a bright - eyed college grad who comes to New York with a big dream and a tiny bank account. He soon discovers that the only neighbourhood in his price range is Avenue Q; still, the neighbours seem nice. Together, Princeton and his newfound friends struggle to find jobs, dates, and their ever-elusive purpose in life.
Avenue Q took Broadway by storm and won three 2004 Tony Awards, for Best Musical, Best Book of a Musical (Jeff Whitty), and Best Original Score (Robert Lopez and Jeff Marx). It went on to successful productions all over the world.
Talking about the show, director Justin Driscoll said: “Avenue Q has been a great challenge for this talented cast, but all that experience goes out the window when you throw puppets into the mix. The cast have risen to the challenge and have done an amazing job bringing these characters to life.
Each of these puppets have been hand-crafted to the Broadway/West End specifications. Coupled with amazing choreography by Emma Driscoll and music direction by Paul Garner, this is going to be a great show.”
Avenue Q is at the Priory Centre from April 12-14. Evening shows will start at 7:30, with a matinee on Saturday at 2:30 pm.
Tickets can be purchased from the Priory Centre, through www.thevamps.org or by calling: 01480 388922.
