From Taylor Sheridan, the Script writer behind Sicario and Hell or High Water comes Wind River, a dark tale of murder set on a Native American reservation in rural Wyoming.

As well as writing the script here, Taylor Sheridan also takes on the director’s chair for the first time to complete what he calls his American frontier trilogy.

The film focuses on the character of Cory Lambert played by Jeremy Renner, a hunter for the states wildlife and fisheries department who after finding the body of a young girl is drawn into an investigation that forces him to relive past traumas of his own.

Elizabeth Olsen stars as the Fish out of water FBI agent Jane Banner who is hastily summoned to the scene completely unprepared for the harsh frozen wastelands of Wyoming.

She is given solid support from Graham Greene as Ben, the local police chief, doing his best with a woefully undermanned team.

The serious subject matter gives the film a dark tone and being told at the beginning the story that is is inspired by actual events only adds to its weight.

Sheridan paces the film steadily and gives the audience time to get to know the characters, but when the action does finally explode in the third act, it makes it all the more visceral.

Olsen impressively portrays her characters progression, taking the agent from brazen to nervously out of her depth.

But Renner is the star of the show. Very much a supporting actor throughout his career, here his performance as the weary tracker is understated but so beautifully nuanced. Without doubt, up there with his career best.

A beautifully shot, tense and atmospheric thriller, exploring loss and revenge in the barren outskirts of society, Wind River is another hit to add to Taylor Sheridans CV, and there will be many keen to see what he produces next.
