The St Neots Vamps’ performance of The Addams Family musical at The Priory Centre last night was wonderful on every level.

There were some stand-out performances, which were further enhanced with the perfect delivery of that cutting dark humour we expect from the dysfunctional Addams clan. Alongside some clever stage sets, lighting and props that serve to transport the audience to the various locations, the VAMPS deserved the standing ovation they received.

The story centres around Wednesday Addams, the daughter of Gomez and Morticia Addams, who has fallen in love with a respectable young man, called Lucus Beineke. Lucas and his parents Mal and Alice are invited to the Addams home for a family dinner, where Wednesday plans to break the news that she intends to marry Lucas. This is the story of good versus bad turned on its head, as the Addams parents will expect their only daughter to find love in a much darker place.

Under the direction of Chris Baker, we were treated to a truly up-lifting performance that included some laugh-out-loud hilarity, but also several touching scenes which reminded us of the strength of family bonds and love.

Emma Verney struts about the stage in haughty Morticia style and her beautiful voice and comic delivery were excellent. Hannah Williams, who plays Wednesday, was also another stand-out performer and the scenes where she confides in her father as the boy she loves breaks her heart were wonderfully touching.

Amy Howard as Alice Beineke was totally convincing and her scenes at the dinner table were laugh-out-loud funny. And finally, Matt Shaw, as Uncle Fester, was brilliant as he serenaded the moon.

A mention must also go to the ensemble and the dancers, and the costume department.

The Addams Family musical is at The Priory Centre till November 14. Tickets are available by calling 01480 388922.
