Review: Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs - a wonderful combination of panto and slapstick comedy

There’s nothing wrong with traditional pantomime and a liberal sprinkling of those safe, family jokes that we all love at this time of year, but it is always enjoyable to see a performance that pushes those boundaries and gives us something very different and very special.
KD Productions’ Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, which is currently showing at The Commemoration Hall in Huntingdon, is a wonderful combination of panto and slapstick comedy that will keep the kids entertained and also have their parents and grandparents chuckling in the aisles.
The first thing of note was the spectacular lighting and special effects, which transformed The Commemoration Hall, and bathed the room in a warm purple glow as the audience were being seated. In fact, the lighting and sound effects throughout the show were spectacular.
The stage sets and costumes were on par with any large professional pantomime and I’m guessing the theatre company does not have a huge budget so all those working behind the scenes to produce so many beautiful costumes (especially Dame Dolly’s lampshade dress!) should be congratulated.
The gags were non-stop and the comedy routines, particularly the pie making scene with Dame Dolly and Muddles were brilliantly done and very funny.
The sweet trolly routine, which was obviously one for the adults, delivered by Dame Dolly (Terry Gauci) was a clever, fast-paced play on words that left the audience in hysterics.
Muddles who entered the stage dancing to All about the Bass, put in a wonderful performance as did the Wicked Queen who had the younger members of the audience booing and hissing in all the right places.

Under the direction of Daniel Bell we were treated to pantomime at its very best. We loved the goodies and hated the bad guys and we were encouraged to get involved and shout, dance and sing.
Last, but definitely not least, was the choreography, which was exceptional. Everyone from the tiny tots to the adult performers put in slick routines that were perfectly timed and a real joy to watch.
