EATON SOCON

SIX women from Eaton Socon are bringing their community together by organising a street party, see picture.

Chairman of the Avon Court Diamond Jubilee Party Committee Pauline Eastoe enlisted the help of five neighbours after “a few glasses of wine” back in January, and the project snowballed from there.

Five months on, and the mother-of-three has raised over 1,000 in ticket sales for the event, which will take place on Monday, June 4.

About 90 people are expected to attend from Kenilworth Close, Avon Court and Shakespeare Road.

“I just thought this would be a really nice way of getting the neighbourhood together,” Mrs Eastoe, 57, told The Hunts Post. “You don’t get opportunities like this these days, and I’ve really got to know my neighbours, which is great.”

The committee received a donation of 20 from Mr and Mrs Tipping – both in their 80s – who felt they were too old to attend to bash. They used the money to purchase the Tipping Cup, which will be presented to the winner of the children’s drawing competition.

INFORMATION: The Avon Court Street Party takes place at Avon Court, Eaton Socon, from noon. Before lunch at 1pm the national anthem will be sung and a toast made to The Queen. Tickets 15 including lunch, drinks, evening barbecue and disco. For more details e-mail ronald.eastoe1@ntlworld.com

At 3pm the races begin, starting with the egg and spoon competition, obstacle races (3.30pm), and tug-of-war heats between 3pm and 4pm.

At 4pm a picnic tea is due to begin and at 4.30pm it’s the gurning competition ahead of the tug-of-war final at 5.10pm.

Street football is at 5.30pm.

LITTLE PAXTON

A 1950s theme will underpin the celebrations in Little Paxton.

As well as the 1950s theme, the event will include a paper magician, disco with party games and children’s races.

Food will be served at 5pm in the village hall.

Parish clerk Jenny Gellatly said: “Members of the WI, St James’s Church and Baby Bumpkins are providing cakes and delicious home baking of the era.

“Residents can bring along their picnic tables and chairs and dress in the style of the 1950s if they wish.”

Also on Saturday Little Paxton Colts Football Club will host a Knock-Out Jubilee Penalty Competition (5pm–6pm) and Little Paxton Cricket Club is organising kwik cricket (6pm–7pm).
