The Huntingdonshire Philharmonic will perform its final concert of its 40th anniversary season on July 2 at the Hinchingbrooke Performing Arts Centre.
Guest conductor will be Dale Christmas and the concert will include works by Kabalevsky, Stravinsky and Shostakovich, with an introductory talk by professor Marina Frolova-Walker.
The Huntingdonshire Philharmonic was formed in 1977 from an amalgamation of the Huntingdon Choral Society and the Huntingdon Orchestral Society and is made up of amateur singers from the local area.
As the anniversary year also marks the centenary of the revolution that transformed the Russian empire into the Soviet Union, the programme is made up of great Russian choral and orchestral music. So far his season the orchestra has performed works by Rimsky-Korsakov, Rachmaninov and Tchaikovsky and this final concert will take the number of Russian composers this season to 12.
“Kabalevsky’ Overture to Colas Breugnon is a master class of orchestral fireworks and brevity, which whirls off like a rocket and is over in a flash,” said Kay Coope from the group.
“Stravinsky’s austere and poignant Symphony of Psalms is one of the absolute masterpieces of the 20th century. Shostakovich’s monumental Symphony Number 5 was an immediate success with both state critics and the public. This feast of Russian music is not to be missed.”
