FOLK legend Jeremy Taylor is bringing his unique blend of South African-inspired folk music to St Neots.
The Berkshire-born musician was an instant success in South Africa when he moved there to teach English in Johannesburg in the 1960’s.
Famous for writing music to satirical observations on all aspects of life, he outsold even Elvis Presley with his biggest-ever hit Ag Pleez Deddy.
The song became known as The Ballad of the Southern Suburbs which discusses daily life amongst working-class white South Africans in the 1960’s and 1970’s.
From simple songs like Donkey’s Charter about the humble Blackpool pleasure beach donkey, to the hit Ag Pleez Daddy which got him thrown out of South Africa because it apparently ridiculed apartheid, Taylors repertoire leaves little to the imagination.
He has written for icons such as Cat Stevens and the amazing mother of Africa Miriam Makeba, appeared as Spike Milligan’s stage partner for two years in the musical comedy show For One week Only and made many a TV appearance including Granada’s At Last its Friday with Richard Stilgoe, Diana Quick and Keith Dewhurst.
This show will see Taylor perform many of his old classic hits such as Jobsworth, Red Velvet, Steering Wheel Cover Driver and Prawns in the Game, as well as introducing new material.
