A new working of Lewis Carroll’s classic story of Alice in Wonderland which explores mental health issues is being performed at Ramsey Library on December 4 and St Neots Library the following day.

Cambridgeshire Libraries welcomes Librarian Theatre with their latest production Alice in the Cuckoo’s Nest which will tour 13 libraries across the county this winter.

Alice in the Cuckoo’s Nest re-imagines Lewis Carroll’s classic story in the setting of a modern day mental institution. The tour kicks off at Ramsey finishes at Chatteris Library in February.

Although the show is family friendly, Alice in the Cuckoo’s Nest is a new experimental adaptation and a far cry from the innocent adventure portrayed by Walt Disney’s 1951 film version: “We’re not shying away from the darker sides of the subject matter,” said company director Tom Cuthbertson, “but nor will there be overly explicit content which would exclude younger audience members. Hopefully audiences of all ages will take something away from it, and it will help fuel important conversations about mental health.”

Cambridgeshire County Council’s chairman of highways and community infrastructure, Cllr Mathew Shuter said: “Libraries are the perfect place to host theatre performances and make them accessible to everyone in local communities. We are very happy the theatre company are coming back for the third time, following glowing reviews from their last visits across the county with their imaginative productions of A Christmas Carol and Hamlet.

Set up by actors Tom Cuthbertson and Kelly Eva-May as a not-for-profit company in 2015, Librarian Theatre work alongside libraries to deliver accessible, affordable, high quality theatre to local communities, whilst using their tours as opportunities to promote and protect public library services, reading and literacy.

Tickets are £7/£4 from: and in libraries.
