The Cromwell Museum in Huntindon is hosting a free event on Saturday to mark 375 years since the beginning of the civil wars.

A Call to Arms is on September 16, from 12.30pm-4.30pm, on the Market Square, Huntingdon, with the sound of battle drums, flags and civil war soldiers. Craft activities and children’s trails will be at the museum.Costumed re-enactors from the Sealed Knot will attend. The public can learn about the politics and battle strategies of the period.

Charles 1 raised his standard in Nottingham on August 20, 1642. Oliver Cromwell quickly chose his side, fighting for Parliament. At this time, he was living in Ely and MP for Cambridge. Many were faced with the same choice as Cromwell: they would fight, but for who?

“We hope by presenting the options to the public in this event, with hands-on replicas of the period, that the people of Huntingdon 375 years later will cast their vote: King or Parliament – Cavalier or Roundhead,” said John Davies.

Entrance to the Museum is free, and visitors can see many authentic objects on display relating to Cromwell including his hat, boots and powder flask. Children’s craft activities on a Civil War theme will also be available free of charge inside the museum.

“We have linked this event with the Falcon Inn, Market Square, Huntingdon, where Cromwell raised troops,” added Mr Davies.

The public are invited to enjoy a pint in one of Cromwell’s top taverns, and listen to a lively talks about the civil wars by local experts during the day, and there will be evening events in the Falcon as well.
