THE acclaimed author P D James is attending Wordfest in Cambridge this week to mark the publication of her new novel.

Death Comes to Pemberley is James’ long-awaited sequel to the Jane Austin classic Pride and Prejudice.

Her latest piece of crime-fiction is set in 1803 when Darcy and Elizabeth have been married for six years.

With two young sons in nursery and Elizabeth’s beloved sister Jane and her husband Bingley living nearby, the orderly world of Pemberley seems idyllic.

But, on the evening of the annual autumn ball, the calm is broken when Lydia Wickham – Elizabeth’s younger, unreliable sister – arrives at the estate with news that her husband has been murdered.

James succeeds in recreating the world of Pride and Prejudice while combining it with the excitement and suspense of a brilliantly crafted crime story.

The 91-year-old author said: “It has been a joy to revisit Pride and Prejudice and discover, as one always does, new delights and fresh insights.”
