St Ives CC members turned out in force to help out at their promotion of the National Final of the Schools Time Trial Championship. More than 120 riders, from 12-16 years of age, had qualified from regional heats to ride the 10 mile course on the B1043 near Sawtry, which the St Ives Club use for their regular evening events. Erick Rowsell completed the course in the fastest time of 21.49 with Greta Junker the fastest girl with 24.24. The best 12 year-old managed 26.45, somewhat faster than many of the more senior cyclists who were marshalling on the course. In events for the more mature rider, Robert Dyke came fourth in the Falling Leaves Eastern Road Race League after getting into an early breakaway but just losing out on the final climb to the finish. This was St Ives' best result this year in a very competitive league. St Ives' time trialists were slightly eclipsed by some top class visitors to the latest Northampton and District 22 mile time trial. Neil Houldey came eighth in 49.21 with Paul Davis 50.29, John Batchelor 54.54, Terry Cooke 56.30 and Miranda Oberman 57.22. These times were good enough to gain some extra team points for the season-long competition. Houldey was less eclipsed when, with Steve Butterworth, their tandem time of 20.16 was fastest in the Ickneild RC 10 mile time trial.Riding solo, Martin Magnago finished in 25.22 and Dave Nelson in 26.51.
