ANOTHER Huntingdonshire gem has surfaced in women's cricket as 23-year-old Gemma Mumby from Ramsey gets the chance to represent Wales in the World Indoor Cricket Cup in Australia later this year.

Mumby qualified to play for Wales when she attended university in Cardiff and, although she is now completing her masters in forensic anthropology at Bournemouth University, she continues to represent Wales.

Just like Huntingdonshire's star of women's cricket, Charlotte Edwards, Mumby started playing as youngster and competed against men's teams at her father's club, Upwood. She attended coaching with the county and was a useful swing bowler. Over the years, she has developed into a solid middle order batsman and well regarded off-spin bowler.

Her career with the Wales team began when friends from Cardiff University invited her along to nets and from there she has gone on to represent Wales in both the outdoor and indoor game.

Her aim is to give the Aussie and Kiwi girls a run for their money in the World Cup but admits that the team may lack experience at the top level.

She told The Hunts Post: "They have played the game for years so we know it will be tough, I hope the experience will help us all to reach the top tier of the national game when we return."

Mumby is also a member of the Cambridge and Papworth Ladies Cricket Club. They play in the second tier of women's cricket and she also plays for Bournemouth University in British Universities' Sports Association.

She said: "Indoor cricket is played in the confines of a netted area and is very fast and furious. The ball is never "dead" and teams consist of eight players picked from a 12-player squad."

INFORMATIOIN: The Welsh team has to raise its own finances to attend the Cricket World Cup so Gemma would be pleased to hear from anyone who could help sponsor her visit to Brisbane in October for the World Cup. Gemma can be contacted on 07795664379. The Hunts Post will bring you a full report of the Indoor World Cup in October.
