Huntingdon & District Stags under-nines – who last year won The Hunts Post’s Junior Team of 2013 award – finished their first season of contact rugby in style by winning three tournaments in just seven days.

Having already secured the Cambs County Cup and the Cottenham Festival Cup in March, the young squad went to a Market Harborough competition and swept aside all-comers before beating Oundle 8-4 in the final.

Then, On Wednesday, the Gold team went to Northampton Saints’ Franklin Gardens and won the final of the East Midlands Mobbs competition beating Bugbrooke St Michaels 9-0.

On Saturday, the Green team were in action crusing through all of their group games in their biggest final of the campaign – the Alan day VW Cup – at Saracens’ Allianz Park.

A spokesman for the Huntingdon team said: “The Greens crusied through their four morning pool games against Royston, Barnet Tigers, South Woodham Ferrers and Saffron Walden before beating Essex side Westcliffe 6-0 in their semi-final.”

The final – against Datchworth –was played in front of a crowd of 9,000 at the half-time break in Saracens’ Aviva Premiership game against Worcester.

Two tries from the captain Liberty Ashdown (she scored nine on the day) and one from Ollie Brand secured the Cup in a 3-1 win.

“It has been another great season for the Stags under-nines,” continued the spokesman.

“They are building a formidable reputation for themselves across the Midlands and the south east.

“They will now have a well-earned summer’s rest before embarking on their under-10s campaign in September.”
