Two world champions tasted success at county level last weekend during the Huntingdonshire Bowling Federation Indoor Finals.

Only weeks after triumphing on the sport’s biggest stage, Nicky Brett and Ellen Falkner were in winning form at Huntingdon IBC.

World number one Brett combined with Warboys clubmate Lyndsay Swannell to take men’s pairs glory in an in-house final. They saw off fellow Warboys duo Rob Elmore and Lee Swannell 16-2 in a one-sided clash that was eventually conceded.

Falkner, who sampled world success for the third time earlier in the year, teamed up with Brett’s daughter, Chloe, and Rebecca Moorbey in the women’s rinks showpiece. They might not have had the experience to rival their opposing trio from the Houghton & Wyton club – Heather McKillop, Carole Hickey and Margaret Elstub – but they certainly had the talent to prevail with a 23-16 victory.

Lewis Baker skipped his rink of Ian Swannell and Lyndsay Swannell to a successful defence in the men’s final, beating Rob Elmore, Lee Swannell and Ed Elmore 20-16 in an all-Warboys affair.

There were mixed fortunes for a husband-and-wife duo who featured in three finals.

Nicky Verlander went down 21-14 to Houghton & Wyton bowler Heather McKillop in the women’s singles and also tasted defeat in the pairs along with partner Edith Gibbard. They lost 23-18 to the combination of Jane Baldwin (St Ives) and Kathy Snitch (Godmanchester).

But Verlander’s other half, Mick, did taste success in the men’s senior singles. He pipped reigning champion David Peak (Hemingfords) by a single shot, 21-20.

Baldwin completed a double when denying McKillop one of her own in the women’s senior singles.

At the other end of the age spectrum, Toby Furzeland of Sawtry got the better of St Neots star and defending champion Moorbey in the Open Under 25 singles final.

Moorbey wasn’t short of success though, as she added to her rinks triumph with Mixed Pairs success. She teamed up with fellow England international Ed Elmore to beat Baldwin and Trevor Dighton 19-13.

There was success for host club Huntingdon as Steve Farrant won the men’s singles. He was always in command in a 21-16 success against Geoff Barlow of St Ives.

Experience got the better of youth in the Mixed Rinks final which was delayed until Tuesday evening.

The Warboys trio of husband-and-wife Susan and Lyndsay Swannell, and clubmate Lewis Baker, eased to a 30-4 victory against Moorbey, her brother Hayden and young St Neots prodigy Mack May.

The Victor Ludorum Trophy, for the overall winning club, was won by Warboys.

All winners, who are connected to outdoor clubs affiliated to Hunts, will now represent the county at the English Bowling

Federation National Finals. They are held at Newark in April.
