Reuter makes successful debut at Queenswood

WHILE the world’s top tennis players slug it out at SW19, one of the potential Wimbledon stars of the future made a successful debut for Great Britain last week.

Ten-year-old Kira Reuter from Hemingford Grey made her bow in the girls’ U12 age group, playing for GB1, in the Queenswood Invitation Team Trophy on the clay courts at Queenswood School in Hertfordshire.

And Reuter, who was playing older girls in a higher age group, put in the performance of the day on Monday, coming from a set and 5-2 down to win her opening match 2-6 7-5 10-5.

Three Great Britain teams were joined by Croatia, Bulgaria, Holland, Switzerland and Belgium in the eight-team draw for the week-long tournament.

Reuter and her team mates, Georgie Axon (Herts) and Katie Swan (Avon), put in some great singles and doubles matches to finish top of their box.

Then they went on to clinch the trophy following a tie break shoot out with Croatia after a tense and close affair.

The GB team even took time out midweek to spend a day at Wimbledon to watch their idols in action.

John Trehearn, who captains the girls’ U12s, said: “It was another great week of tennis and I was delighted with the three girls’ attitude all week.

“Their tennis and application has been terrific and they deserved the win.

“This has been great preparation for the Nations Challenge Summer Cup coming up later this month.”
