FORMER St Neots Hockey Club player Vicky Wilkinson has been selected for the British Colleges squad – and will be heading overseas to represent her country at an international colleges tournament.

Wilkinson, who is 16 and a forward, is a student at Cambridge Regional College studying Btec level 3 sport studies, was chosen to be part of the 25-player under-19s squad after attending trials in Cannock, Staffordshire.

Now she is hoping for a little fun in the sun: last year's squad entered a tournament in Barcelona, Spain - but this year's destination is still undecided.

Having started playing hockey aged just five, Wilkinson left St Neots for Cambridge City when she was 14 and has since played for Cambridgeshire and has reached the regional squad - the Bury Tigers - who are based at Bury St Edmunds.

On top of all that, she is also involved in the East Youth Panel, which helps promote the game, and has helped run 'mini' tournaments at Harleston Magpies over the last two years.

"I'm very excited about being chosen for the squad and I am looking forward to playing with a new team and playing other teams of a good standard," she told The Hunts Post, adding: "I'm especially looking forward to playing against other countries."

Last weekend Wilkinson was playing indoor hockey for Cambridge City at the Kelsey Kerridge tournament and scored three goals.

"As a family we are very proud of Vicky for all she has achieved and all the hard work she puts in," said her mother, Dina Wilkinson. "She also plays netball, volleyball and has recently joined St Neots' rugby team."
