WARESLEY won promotion to Division One of the TuckerGardner League on Saturday when they swept aside Warboys to secure second place ahead of their Huntingdonshire rivals.

Simon Donald hit 72 with Ian Donald not out on 19 when Waresley began celebrating their nine-wicket win after bettering Warboys’ total of 94.

It was the bowlers who had done the damage – Nigel Buckingham-Jones, Terry Hayden and Laurence Bosher taking three wickets each with Warboys’ Chris Whitfield’s 29 not out the best the visitors could offer.

“It’s just the sort of end to a season that we have deserved over the last couple of years,” said the club’s chairman Barry Warman.

“We had new nets this year thanks to a grant from Sport England – and we have all generally pulled together.”

Waresley’s overseas player, 19-year-old Erne Neville, made a big difference during the season and the chairman hopes he will return next year when Waresley will be playing against Ramsey, Godmanchester Town and St Ives Town at the highest level Huntingdonshire regional cricket can offer.

“Erne is going back to Melbourne but we will be asking him back again,” said Warman.

“The coaches have really played their part too this season with Andy Donald, Terry Hayden, Steve Warman and Phil Masdin all doing wonderful jobs. After last year’s colts’ success and now this promotion, our presentation night on October 6 will be wonderful. It’s just a shame I am double-booked and will be taking the family to the theatre. I will certainly be trying to get there later on.”

Warboys, who only won promotion to Division Two of the Cambs & Hunts Premier League from the Hunts League last year, ended up in fourth behind Newborough who also lost their final match of the season when they were comprehensively beaten by Yaxley.

In Division One St Ives’ Matthew Durrant scored an amazing 124 not out in their six wicket win at Nassington, despite the home side setting them a target of 201.

The final day derby between Ramsey and Godmanchester was won by the home side with Elliot Smith making 85 for last season’s champions as they chase Goddy’s total of 198 during which Adam Cousins scored a marvellous 95 before falling LBW to David Carlaw.
