Skipper Matt Duncan is confident Warboys can avoid a second successive relegation after snapping a five-match losing run to climb out of the Tucker Gardner League Division Two drop-zone.
Duncan top-scored with 85 - although he was kicking himself to miss out on a century - as his side claimed something of a surprise 16-run success last Saturday against a Kimbolton side who had won their four previous games to launch a promotion challenge.
Duncan’s innings helped his side to a handy 227-6 before they dismissed the visitors for 211. Andy Waters was the pick of the bowlers with 3-38 while James Trafford, Sam Vallance and Matt Lavender claimed a couple of victims apiece.
Trafford removed Kimbolton dangerman Ruben Claassen after he had hit a ton. The South African ace’s 107 provided more than half of the losing side’s runs.
“It’s about time we got a result,” admitted Duncan. “We lost five games in a row and also had another one cancelled, which also felt like a defeat as everyone else played that day.
“Availability has been a big issue and so has a lack of runs, but hopefully it looks like we’ve managed to get both things sorted although I was gutted to miss out on a hundred.
“I chased a wide ball and paid the price, and I feared it might cost us when they were making good progress in their reply, but we managed to get Claassen out and that was the vital wicket.
“We bowled well to finish the job and it is a nice boost to be out of the bottom three.
“Another relegation would be dreadful for the club and we are all determined to avoid it.
“We’ve got Kimbolton again this Saturday and then two teams below us in Weston Colville and Huntingdon & District in the next couple of games.
“It’s a very important spell in our season and, touch wood, we’re looking quite strong for it.”
Warboys’ escape from the bottom three sent Huntingdon & District tumbling into the relegation zone.
Martin Burton’s side slipped to their fifth successive defeat when going down to Cambridge Granta 2nds by 34 runs at St Peters Road.
The customary big score from West Indian ace Dario Cummins, who made 59, was not enough as they were dismissed for 192 in pursuit of 226-8.
Those two teams also face each other again tomorrow.
