FA Vase Second Round

Godmanchester Rovers 0

Stanway Rovers 1

GODMANCHESTER Rovers’ best run in the FA Vase came to a disappointing end against Stanway Rovers as the home team failed to capture their recent form.

The game’s only goal came 10 minutes into the second half, when Stanway striker reacted first to a deflection to head home.

Though disappointed at his team’s run coming to an end, manager David Hurst said he had few complaints about the result.

“We can only blame ourselves for the defeat. They came with a plan and we never really broke them down to create any clear-cut chances.”

After a bright start by both teams, the match closed up with some tight defending, and Goddy keeper Carl Mackney needed to be alive to pull off a couple of good stops.

The match changed five minutes before the break.

A Stanway forward sustained a severe leg injury which held up play for 30 minutes. Both teams were sent to the changing rooms while an ambulance removed the injured player, and when the match restarted Goddy found themselves on the back foot.

“We never regained any hold on the match after that” said Hurst. “Stanway seemed to be galvanised by the incident. Inside 10 minutes of the second half a lucky deflection found their player who nodded home from two yards.”

He added: “We huffed and puffed, came close but couldn’t find the touch we’ve had of late. Before this defeat we had four wins and a draw, so we want to get back to that form against Long Melford on Saturday.”
