Two club records and 21 triumphs make it a happy homecoming for Hunts AC

A stack of successes and two new club bests ensured Hunts AC enjoyed a successful Southern League outing on home turf on Saturday.
Hunts athletes claimed 21 victories in the Division Three North-East fixture at St Ives, but it was a second-placed finish that caused a couple of rewrites to the record-books.
Polly Smith lowered her own entries for Under 20 and Senior women in the 2000m steeplechase by clocking 8:05.4 – some 24 seconds below her previous best.
Smith had earlier stormed to victory in the 3000m ‘A’ race and there was a Hunts AC double over that distance with fifteen year-old Amelia Darnell making a winning debut in the ‘B’ race.
Hunts also double-cause for celebration in the 800m as Siobhan Skinner kicked clear to win the ‘A’ event and Rachel Sweatt clocked a best-ever time to land the ‘B’ race.
Skinner also finished second in the 400m ‘B’ race with Lily Seach occupying the same spot at ‘A’ level.
Skinner, Seach, Sweatt and 14 year-old Aleta Fraylich provided further success with a 4-400m relay triumph in the club’s fastest time for eight years.

Lucy Waller was successful in the ‘B’ pole vault before knocking nine seconds off her 1500m best to finish second in the ‘A’ race.
Jodie Vuylsteke could hardly have been more dominant in the ‘B’ event over that distance as she powered 27 seconds clear of her rivals - a mammoth personal best of her own.
Tracy Burton threw her way to a hat-trick of top spots with victories in the ‘A’ discus, ‘B’ shot putt and ‘B’ hammer – the latter win coming in her first competition in the event.
There was plenty more success from the men as well.
Owen King and Owain Collard were unstoppable in the sprints with 100m and 200m doubles while Tom Bray clocked his fastest 400m time for two years to take victory in that event.
All three men tasted more success after joining forces with Llewelyn Thomas to come tantalisingly close to the club’s 4-100m relay record before they teamed up with veteran Andy Stowe to claim another win in the 4-400m relay.
Incredibly, Collard also found the time to deliver the best triple-jump by a Hunts AC athlete for eight years with a leap of 11.95 to finish third in that event.
Other wins on the track came from Liam Hunt in the 110m hurdles ‘A’ race and Richard Phelan over the 400m obstacles in the ‘B’ string.
In the field Wayne DuBose (pole vault) and Bob Ellingham (hammer) were ‘B’string winners.
The only disappointment for Hunts AC was a failure to provide athletes in seven events as they had to settle for second spot on the day behind Dacorum & Tring.
The club’s next Southern League fixture is at Braintree on July 4.
