Waresley will go to Ramsey for a big Tucker Gardner Premier One Hunts derby on Saturday full of confidence after picking up 16 points from a draw at home to Histon to keep them top of the table.

But Ramsey’s captain Taylor West says he is fairly confident that when his team are at their best, they can beat anyone in the league, and that Waresley are punching above their weight right now.

Waresley lead the table from Ramsey by a single point after they failed to finish off their visitors – but captain Simon Donald was happy with the result which saw them stay at the top of the table for the second week. “Sixteen points is the most points we can get without winning so I have to be pleased with that,” he said. “It was a decent effort.”

Waresley set Histon a target of 205 for seven from their 48 overs with Ian Donald, the 23-year-old captain’s 17-year-old brother, hitting a brilliant 73. But two early wickets gave Waresley a false sense of security, said Simon Donald, and for 20 over the team let things drift.

“We just couldn’t get their last two in the last seven overs,” he said. “We had a dropped catch and some LBW shouts but they hung on.

“We dominated really so it is disappointing in a way – but with nine wickets down they were blocking and they never looked like they were going to chase. With 200 on the board we should have had them.”

Nigel Buckingham-Jones took four wickets for 17 runs to add to the five he took last week when Waresley opened their campaign with a win against Camden.

Ramsey made light work of their win at March for two wins out of two games. March could only manage 101 all out with Ramsey’s Michael Cafferkey their key bowler taking five wickets for 20 runs. In reply, Ramsey hit 102 for five wickets.

West was not completely dismissing Waresley’s chances against them when he talked to The Hunts Post, but he certainly doesn’t consider them a threat to his side’s title credentials this season. “I have seen some pretty bold statements from Waresley considering where they finished last season,” he said.

“We have had two fairly difficult games against Foxton and March and we have won them both, so I think we will have enough to beat Waresley.

“When we are at our best we should be able to beat anyone in this league but I think that will be the same for Wisbech and Godmanchester – those are the two teams I think will be the biggest threat.”

However, after all the promise of an opening day win against Warboys, Godmanchester Town stumbled against Sawston on saturday after they were all out for just 77. Paul Swannell’s 18 was Goddy’s highest knock on a day they will prefer to forget.

Having lost their 10 wickets in 36.4 overs, Goddy could only take five of Sawston’s before the visitors reached their target in the 30th over.

New boys Warboys gave it a good shot at champions Wisbech Town where they managed to get the home side all out for 201 –but they fell 49 runs short in their chase.

James Trafford took four wickets for 32 and Sam Latchford three for 36 but half-decent knocks from Alex Grange (26), Dan Wright (25) and Adam Hyde (23) weren’t solid enough to mount a serious challenge.

This Saturday Warboys host March while Godmanchester are away at Nassington.

In Division Two, Simon Jones top scored for St Ives Town who lost their second match of two.

A masterclass from Khalsa’s Fisal Javed saw off St Ives with the player taking six wickets for 41 runs and hitting 84 as an opener. Khalsa reached St Ives’s 175 for the loss of just four wickets.

Eaton Socon’s game at Fordham was abandoned after Friday’s weather made the pitch unplayable. They are away at Abington on Saturday with St Ives, still looking for their first win, going to Yaxley.
