Waresley top Division One of the Cambs & Hunts Tucker Gardner Premier League from Godmanchester Town in second and Ramsey in fourth after the opening day of the 2014 campaign on Saturday.

Waresley beat Camden by three wickets to collect a maximum 25 points, while Goddy came out on top in the day’s big Hunts derby game against newly promoted Warboys, and Ramsey coasted to a win against Foxton & Babraham with Michael Cafferkey scoring a brilliant 117 not out and taking three wickets for 39 runs.

Cafferkey, the 23-year-old Hunts county player, spent the winter in Australia playing for Victoria side Sale-Maffra in the Gippsland Cricket League – and his form will be key as Ramsey mount a challenge for the title they won in 2011 but lost on the last day last year to Wisbech – their final game of the season, at St Ives Town, was controversially called off because of a waterlogged pitch.

On Saturday, Ramsey lost the toss and were second to bat – but a 56 from David Clarke set the platform for Cafferkey to chase Foxton’s 213-7. The home side had lost just five wickets when they reached 215.

Team captain Taylor West said: “It was a good game – it is always close when we play Foxton, they are a good side.

“But it was important to send out a message to the other teams in the league that we mean business. It was important we made a point.”

Waresley’s James Dallaway hit 75 in their win at home to Camden with Nigel Buckingham-Jones taking five wickets for 38 runs.

Waresley lost the toss and were set a target of 168-7 by the Cambridge side. Dominic Farr chipped in with a neat 29 as the team knocked off 169 for the loss of seven wickets in 46.2 overs. “It went right down to the wire,” said Waresley’s captain Simon Donald. “I think we will do well. The top sides have strengthened but there are sides we can definitely beat home and away.”

Matt Pateman, the captain of Godmanchester, was the top run scorer as his side eased to a win at home to Warboys.

With Leighton Gilbert sidelined while he recovers from damaged ankle and knee ligaments, Warboys were captained by Matt Durrant, but the team could only muster 113 all out from 39.3 overs. The bowler that did most of the damage was Godmanchester’s Indian overseas player Kiran Adhav who took six wickets for 21 runs and then helped knock off the winning runs.

Adam Pedlar was Warboys’s highest run scorer with 26 before he was the first of Adhav’s victims – and Matt Pateman (36) and Matt Davies-Binge (33) made light work of their chase of the meagre target getting there with the loss of three wickets in 19.3 overs.

St Ives Town began life in Division Two with a disappointing loss to Blunham – and they sit rock bottom of the table on six points.

Eaton Socon, who narrowly missed out on promotion to Division One last season, are fifth following an opening day draw with Burwell II.

St Ives were relegated from Division One at the end of last season but a winter shake-up in the league saw the team offered the chance to stay where they were. However, The club decided it should rebuild from Division Two and so opened their season against Blunham and were given a bit of a drubbing.

Blunham put on 269 runs for seven wickets in their innings, a target that St Ives failed to get anywhere near when they were all out for 113.

The team’s captain, Richard Greiller, said St Ives finally floundered with a few rash shots.

“All in all it was a disappointing league opener – we were outplayed in all departments by Blunham,” he said. “A much improved performance will be required if we are to get some joy next week against Khalsa.”

Eaton kicked off their campaign with a draw against newly-promoted Burwell II.

Batting first, Eaton declared after 47 overs on 203-7 after some good knocks from Ray Tudor (60), Matt Taylor (46) and Joe Donnelly (41).

Eaton got off to a great start with the ball, reducing Burwell to 80 for eight wickets after 27 overs with Ryan Vale taking 3-28 and Ben Gowling and Ryan Worboys taking two wickets each. But, running out of steam at the last, Eaton failed to take another wicket and Burwell ended their innings on 155-8.

“From the position we were in we should have finished the job off,” said captain Terry Day. “But there are some positives were we can take into next week’s game against Fordham, which is one we should be looking to win.”

There has been little movement into the club over the winter but opening batsman Chris Budd has left for March Town and Carl Baker is now working away, so it could be considered the team has taken a step backwards during the break. However, Day is still confident his team can go up.

He said: “The aim is to go one better than last season and win promotion but we have lost a couple of batsmen and the league is a lot tougher. We are up for the challenge.”

On Saturday, Eaton will go to Fordham.
