PAPWORTH trio Marie Starkey, Katie Webb and Tina Webb were among the winners at the Huntingdon County Women's Bowling Association's finals day.

The Papworth ladies triumphed in the triples event, seeing off the challenge of the Peterborough & District club 24-11.

Other winners from Huntingdonshire clubs included Hemingford bowler Lynda Childs' victory in the secretary singles and St Ives pair Jane Baldwin and Michelle Barlow's triumph in the pairs.

Baldwin and Barlow held off mother and daughter Katie and Tina Webb to win the event 26-15, while Childs defeated Joan Meadows, of Perkins, 21-14.

Elsewhere, St Ives bowler Emma Jepson missed out 21-17 to Joan Robinson from Peterborough & District in the four wood singles final.

Shirley White of Werrington took the unbadged singles crown by walkover after Peterborough bowler Sandy Collison pulled out with a broken arm.

The fours event was won by a team from Yaxley, who defeated a Peterborough foursome 22-20.

Also played at the weekend was the final of the inter-club championship, known as the Durham Centenary Trophy.

White Hart Warboys were the narrow victors in the event, seeing off the challenge of Brampton Institute Bowls Club.

The match was played over 25 ends by four rinks and saw the lead see-saw in a closely-fought contest.

Brampton were leading by three shots with 20 ends gone but Warboys held a two-shot advantage going into the final rink of the final end.

Brampton needed two shots to force a tie but Phil Gale was unable to dislodge the winning bowl and it was Warboys who took one shot to win the crown by three.

Warboys will now go on to represent the county in the 2008 inter-county stage of the competition, which could take them to the national finals.

Presentations were made by county president Mick Rayson, who hosted the traditional women's vs men's match on Sunday, bringing the curtain down on the event.

Funds raised at the event will be added to Mick Rayson's fund and distributed to breast cancer causes later this year.
