United Counties League Division One

Sleaford Town 2 Huntingdon Town 0

HUNTINGDON had a disappointing weekend as they lost 2-0 to top-of-the-table Sleaford Town despite putting in a heroic and determined performance.

Huntingdon got off to the worst possible start, conceding a penalty in only the third minute. Huntingdon keeper Ryan Hunt showed why he was March goalkeeper of the month with a fine and vital save to deny Sleaford the lead, however.

The honours were even for the rest of the half until Huntingdon defender Dan Meston was sent off for violent conduct a minute before the break, making Huntingdon's task that much harder.

Huntingdon came out determined in the second half and, despite the set-back of having only 10 men, managed to contain the Sleaford attack, Hunt enhancing his reputation further with a string of fine saves.

Sleaford continued to wear down the Huntingdon defence and on 68 minutes they finally made the breakthrough with a goal from Matt Lamming.

Huntingdon didn't give up and went looking for the equaliser but it didn't come and Lamming added a second for Sleaford three minutes from time to compound the away side's disappointment.

Huntingdon manager Mick Hunt said of his teams performance: "We were always going to have our backs against the wall against this side, but gave it everything we had and showed good determination.

"The red card made the job almost impossible but we held on and weren't broken down until the 70th minute.

"I'm proud of the team for that and I thought Ryan Hunt in particular put in a truly five-star performance."

Mick said of the teams plans for the rest of the season: "We can't be relegated this season and we've got six games left, so we'll try our hardest to win them all.

"There's plenty still to play for and the prospect of our young side developing further is an exciting one.

"These last six fixtures will help development, putting us in good stead for next season when we hope to have a formidable side."

St Neots Town 4 Ford Sports Daventry 1

SAINTS took an emphatic home victory against Ford Sports in a game that saw St Neots player-manager Steve Kuhne score his side's four goals and pass the 300-goal mark in UCL football.

Town played against the wind in the first half, and Daventry took advantage by opening the scoring in the eleventh minute after missing an earlier chance.

Saints settled down after that and denied Daventry any further chances whilst creating plenty of their own.

The effort paid off when, after 26 minutes, Kuhne volleyed a Matt Endersby cross into the net to equalise.

Another Kuhne goal, a diving header from a Jon Hoggett cross, came just before half-time to put Saints in the ascendancy going into the break.

Saints failed to capitalise on their first-half efforts at the start of the second, as Daventry pushed forward.

Saints weathered the storm and, after being felled in the box in the 66th minute, Kuhne sealed his hat-trick from the penalty spot.

St Neots pushed on, creating a number of chances before Kuhne added his fourth, again from the spot after Mark Franklin was fouled, sealing the win and giving Kuhne his record-breaking 42nd goal of the season.

St Ives Town 0 Raunds Town 0

NEITHER team could get the upper-hand in a game marred by wind, leaving the two teams to share the points and maintain their positions in mid-table.

Rob Mackney in the Saints goal did himself justice on his debut for the club, putting in some impressive saves to keep out the Raunds attack.

With both teams defending well chances were at a premium, but St Ives' Jon Lee and Craig Donaldson both came close to scoring only to be denied by the Raunds keeper.

St Ives Assistant Manager Jez Hall Said of the game: "The ground was rock-hard and the wind was blowing so it was always going to be a difficult game.

"Only a mistake or a moment of brilliance was going to decide the game either way, but in the end it wasn't to be.

"Still, I'm happy to stretch our recent unbeaten run," added Hall.
