Godmanchester Rovers boss Matt Clements revealed two of his players have snubbed higher-level interest to stay at the club.

Goalkeeper Niall Conroy and captain Taylor Parr have committed themselves to Rovers’ title challenge in the Thurlow Nunn League Premier Division.

“Both lads have been looked at by clubs at a higher level and both have snubbed the interest to stay,” said Clements.

“It is a great boost for us and shows that Godmanchester is a good place to be.”

Rovers bounced back to winning ways with a 5-0 destruction of Fakenham Town last Saturday – a fine response to the disappointment of an FA Cup exit the previous weekend.

Defenders Lloyd Groves and Lewis McDonald, wideman Luke Seaber-Shinn and Austen Diaper, and substitute Jonny Hall hit the goals.

It was a goalscoring farewell from the bench for Hall, who will miss the next three months of the season while travelling.

Clements added: “It was the perfect response from the lads. Everyone was disappointed with the way we went out of the FA Cup at Yaxley in our previous game.

“But they didn’t lick their wounds – they showed great character to get back on track with a lot of goals and a clean sheet.”

Rovers face a trip to Long Melford this Saturday, but they have important county cup business to attend to before then.

They launch the defence of their Hunts Senior Cup crown when hosting St Neots Saints at the quarter-final stage tonight (Wednesday).

Clements plans to hand 16 year-old talent Chris Hartley a full debut and will include a number of other members of the club’s under 18 side among his substitutes.

Saints will go into the Hunts Senior Cup tie on a high after making FA Vase progress last Saturday.

Lydia Bedford’s side recorded their first victory of the season – and her first at the helm – when seeing off Team Bury in the first qualifying round.

Chris Lewis hit both goals in a 2-1 success at the Premier Plus Stadium to earn a trip to higher-level Mildenhall in the next round on October 3.

Eynesbury Rovers also enter the competition at the second qualifying round stage when they host Fakenham.
