English light-welterweight champion Tommy Martin will return to the ring next month . . . but he is unlikely to be defending his title.

The unbeaten St Neots puncher has not fought since becoming the youngest man to ever capture the national crown with a points verdict over Ricky Boylan at the O2 Arena in London back in January.

He climbs back through the ropes on June 26 at the Echo Arena in Liverpool with the identity of his opponent still to be confirmed.

But the 21 year-old’s sole focus is on claiming a 12th successive victory regardless of who stands across the ring from him.

Martin said: “I fought in Liverpool last year in my first bout after being signed by Eddie Hearn.

“It’s a really good venue and I’m looking forward to going back.

“It’s not as big as the O2 but my Team Gun supporters made so much noise last time to create a great atmosphere.

“I had about 270 fans there that night and I’m sure they will follow me again.

“Eddie is keen for me to have an eight-rounder and it is likely to be against an international opponent.

“At this stage I have no idea who I will be facing. It could be anyone from anywhere!

“But that doesn’t really bother me. I’m just focused on getting fit and sharp in training and then overcoming whoever is in front of me on the 26th.

“The plan is to win this fight and move on for a big domestic fight sometime later in the year – probably September. That could be a title defence or a case of stepping up to British, Commonwealth or maybe veen WBC International level.”

Martin claimed a points success over Ainsley Seivwright when last fighting at the Echo Arena in July 2014.

He added: “I have some good memories from that night as it was an important step on the way to winning the English title.
