ST Neots Town won their big Boxing Day derby at Biggleswade Town - but had to come from behind to take all three points at the Carlsberg Stadium.

However, manager Dennis Greene was quick to point out: “Their goal came out of nothing - and we reacted well.”

Greene began the game with new striker Ben Mackey up front alongside captain Stefan Moore - and it was Mackey who flicked on a cross to feed Moore for the Saints equaliser in the 35th minute after they had gone behind to a 28th minute Craig Daniel goal.

Before half time it was 2-1, Jordan Gent getting a rare goal when he forced the ball home with a downward header following a free kick from right back Rene Steer.

Lewis Webb replaced left back Ashley Deeney at half time and shortly after the restart Biggleswade goalkeeper Anthony Elder was on hand to stop a Moore shot, while Michael Duggan also reacted quickly when Daniel had a second chance following a great through ball from Brett Donnelly.

It was Shane Tolley who got St Neots third goal after coming off the bench for Mackey, the man who had taken his starting place.

Greene brought Mackey to the club to add strength to his forward line and it looks like it will be Tolley who suffers - but the manager was absolutely delighted with his substitute after he came on midway through the second half. It was Moore who won the ball to set up the striker with a sideways header.

“The addition of Ben is making other people work harder,” said the boss. “Tolley looked bright when he came on and was sharp.

“Ben did well, he is a target to hit and he flicked on the ball for Stef’s goal.

“Our away form could be better but we dominated and pressure after their goal and deserved the points.”

St Neots now travel to Chalfont St Peter on Saturday before hosting Barton Rovers at the Hunts Post Community Stadium on the Bank Holiday Monday, January 2.
