DES Thresh has been confirmed as the champion of 2010 Kumho Tyres BMW Championship.

The British Automobile Racing Club confirmed last week that Thresh’s two B Class victories at Thruxton on had been enough to clinch the title ahead of D Class driver Stephan Lanfermeijer.

Lanfermeijer had claimed that there were not enough cars racing in Thresh’s class following a restart in the final race for Thresh to be awarded maximum points.

Huntingdon racer Thresh told The Hunts Post: “Now that I’ve had time to take it all in, I feel fabulous.

“I was always confident that we would be declared winners, but we just had to wait to hear it from the authorities.

The 46-year-old sealed the title in just his second season of racing, after having finished as runner-up last year.

He added: “It was a bit frustrating not to be confirmed as champion after the final race, but the most important thing is that I have now.

“We’ve had our ups and downs this season, but the team effort has been fantastic.”

Thresh admitted he understood why Lanfermeijer had lodged the appealed that delayed his coronation as champion.

“I would have done the same thing in his shoes,” said Thresh. “There’s not a lot you can do about the appeal, you just have to await the decision.

“If I hadn’t won it, I would have just kept at it, and made sure that I won it next season.”
