St Ives Bulls

TIGHT defensive performances from St Ives U10s earned them three consecutive victories in their clashes at Ely at the weekend.

The first encounter ended 15-5 in Saints' favour thanks to a hat-trick of long-range scores from Sam Hirons.

Bernie Augstein and Harry Leyden put in some excellent tackles to keep Ely at bay, with Tyler Elstub and Sam Kennedy dangerous on the attack.

The second match was more one-sided as St Ives claimed a 20-0 victory. Tim Dale, Malcolm Maclean and Bradley White were at the heart of the action while Hirons, Elstub, Kennedy and Daniel McManus crossed the try line.

The final fixture between the sides ended in another 15-5 victory for Saints. Toby Naylon and Jack Fleming looked dangerous on the wings with Augstein and Chris Radbone strong in defence. Hirons scored two tries and McManus the other as St Ives completed a clean sweep of victories.

* MATT Bligh won the man of the match award as St Ives U15s overwhelmed visitors Rushden & Higham 53-0.

A large crowd gathered at Somersham Road to watch a one-sided contest in which Andrew Howard gave Saints the lead out wide. Alex Bignell scored the next try with a low run before Josh Gladwell crossed for his first score for the Bulls and Bligh added another before the break.

Leading 22-0 at half time, St Ives continued to apply pressure and Ben Sockett drove over for his first score of the season. Tino Zicchi added a try under the posts before Bligh crossed for his second of the game.

Robert Hickman and Howard added the final two tries of the game with Howard also chipping in with four conversions as Saints eased home.

* SAINTS U13s pounded visiting Rushden & Highams, who borrowed St Ives' own brave volunteer Greg Dale, 60-0 in an emphatic performance.

Jake Peattie and Dan Malem both scored hat-tricks while Angus Hughes and Nick Matthews were also among the points, with Jack Topham in form with the boot.

* A NARROW defeat awaited St Ives U14s in their weekend trip to Cambridge.

Scrum-half Adam Curtis, Pat Nicholson and Jonny Radbone all scored tries but it wasn't quite enough as they missed out 22-15.

Huntingdon Stags

STAGS U15s finished their 2006 campaign on a disappointing note as visitors Cambridge left with a 15-0 victory.

Greg Southgate was named man of the match for a strong performance but neither he, nor tough-tacklers Mikey Wenn and Alex Benzie, could prevent the defeat.
