Rising St Ives Swimming Club star James Quinn became the fastest swimmer of his kind in the country last weekend.

Quinn produced a sizzling 31.04 performance when powering to 50m breaststroke glory at the Nova Centurion Open Meet in Nottingham.

It rocketed him to the top of the national rankings in the 14yrs boys age bracket and formed part of a hat-trick of honours at the Level One event. Quinn also claimed 100m and 200m breaststroke victories.

“James has the power and technique to go far,” said St Ives Swimming Club head coach Andy Hunter. “He is a very capable swimmer with bags of ability.

“He has been awarded Elite National Athlete status by Huntingdonshire District Council and, along with One Leisure, we have developed a dry-land training regime which is also helping his swimming immensely.”

Quinn is favourite for all three breaststroke events at the Junior Regional Championships in Luton this weekend. He will also tackle all three races at the British Summer Championships.

Quinn was not the only member of the thriving St Ives club to impress in Nottingham. Janos Kadar picked up two medals – 50m backstroke silver and 100m backstroke bronze – while Ciara Taylor picked up bronze in the 50m freestyle.

Tom Davis, Cathy Thomson, Mia Woods, Josh Marshall and Bethan Endicott also took part – and all delivered lifetime best performances.

Endicott, Taylor, Luke Tunstall, Lottie Flynn, Georgia Spencer, Olivia Smith and Tom Lucas have also qualified for the Junior Regional Championships.
