A terrific Cambridgeshire County Championships campaign came to a successful conclusion for St Ives Swimming Club last weekend.

The local club scooped eight medals in the closing relay races with the quartet of Andy Weatheritt, Ollie Fitt, Fran Crocker and Cathy Thomson striking gold in the mixed open freestyle event.

There was also a relay silver and six bronzes to take St Ives’ overall medal tally across the three weekends of county competition to 63 – 21 gold, 22 silver and 20 bronze. They finished third in the final standings behind champions Cambridge and runners-up City of Peterborough – both much larger clubs.

There was individual recognition for two St Ives talents as Ciara Taylor (13yrs girls) and Thomson (ladies) were the leading swimmers in their age brackets.

“It has been a terrific county championships for us,” said St Ives head coach Andy Hunter. “Every swimmer gave their all and achieved superb results to help us finish third in the medal table, which is very pleasing.”

St Ives are now preparing to compete at the Hamm International in Germany from March 16-18. The club will be represented by 28 swimmers as they face competition from across Europe.
