A YOUNG Huntingdon Piranhas squad won the best visiting team honour by a considerable margin at the West Norfolk Swimming Club Spring Open Meet, held in Kings Lynn.

Eleven teams took part and most of the team of 17 swimmers, ranging in ages from nine to 15, competed in five events – the 25 metre freestyle, the 50 metre freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly and the 100 metre individual medley.

Top honours went to 10-year-old Jessica Mansfield, who won gold in three events and secured a silver and bronze as well.

Mansfield finished fifth in the award standings for the top female swimmer on the day.

Also competing well were Mia Leech who, at only eight, won three silver and two bronze medals and finished 10th in the overall standings.

Meanwhile Chloe Gibson, 14, won three bronze medals and two fourth place ribbons and finished 17th in the overall standings.

For the boys, William Davies and Tom Russell, both 14, were the best placed swimmers.

Davies won the 50 metre butterfly and was second in both the 50 metre backstroke and the individual medley. He was placed 10th overall. Tom Russell took silver in both the 50 metre freestyle and breaststroke, and a bronze in the individual medley. He was placed 14th overall.

Head coach John Richard said: “It is congratulations all round for a great team effort.

“Obviously we had five swimmers that shone, but the whole team contributed to our overall success with some really consistent performances.”
