St Ives Swimming Club starred on the European stage last weekend.

The local talents captured 22 medals when competing in the Sparkassen Cup in Germany – an event which attracted 38 teams and more than 3,330 swimmers to the city of Hamm.

Ciara Taylor was the most successful St Ives star as she won six gold medals in freestyle, backstroke, butterfly and individual medley events. She also earned a silver to complete a stunning personal haul.

James Quinn also struck gold twice with Georgia Newstead and Janos Kadar the club’s other winners.

Bethan Endicott won two silver medals and a bronze, while Lizzy Ella and Ewan Desborough claimed one silver apiece.

Quinn also earned three bronze medals while Luke Tunstall managed two. Kadar also picked up one silver.

St Ives were also represented by Tiernan Stevenson, Sian Woods, Mia Woods, Connie Newstead, Lucy Ella, Toby Offord, Harper Jackson, Mike Lardner, Georgia Spencer, Alice Turner, Sophie Turner, Elliot Dickson, Harry Everett, Issy Hemingway Stark, Ciera Norman, Tom Lucas and Lottie Dodge, who also produced some exceptional swims and a host of top 10 finishes.

St Ives were 12th in the overall standings of the event - which featured swimmers from Germany, Romania, Russia, Holland and Ireland - despite having to miss the final session to begin their journey home.

Head coach Andy Hunter said: “A great experience was had by all at a high level international event.

“It was a terrific achievement to win so many medals and see so many lifetime best swims.”

St Ives’ participation in the event was only possible due to sponsorship from Glen Stevenson and Component Recovery Solutions.
