St Ives Swimming Club star Ollie Fitt enjoyed the perfect preparation for the ASA Winter National Championships - by ruling supreme at regional level last weekend.

The 17 year-old talent, based in St Neots, completed a hat-trick of backstroke titles at the ASA East Region Winter Championships in Luton, triumphing over 50m (26.30), 100m (55.80) and 200m (2.01.37).

All three of those efforts were personal bests as Fitt proved he is in fine fettle ahead of his big day at the Ponds Forge pool in Sheffield early next month.

Delighted coach Andy Hunter said: “Ollie’s 200m time makes him the third fastest swimmer of his age in the country for that event.

“He is also beating older and more experienced swimmers on a regular basis, and I’m very hopeful he can do well at the Winter National Championships.

“He is due to go to university at Loughborough next year when he will have double the training time and access to fantastic sports science facilities to assist his development.

“He certainly has the potential to be an excellent national, if not international, swimmer.”

Fitt wasn’t the only St Ives swimmer to impress last weekend as Cathy Thomson, Fran Crocker, Mike Lardner, Emily Gallagher, Jazz Dearnly and Lucas Dove all performed well at Luton. They delivered a host of lifetime bests during the event.
