MIRANDA Oberman was the fastest female competitor at St Ives Cycling Club's first time trial of the year. The trial, the Ely Hardriders 25 mile, requires a high degree of motivation to complete the circuit when the soggy fen is leaking onto the road surfaces. Oberman completed the circuit in one hour 12 minutes, just holding off club member Rachael Smith, who clocked a time of one hour, 14 minutes in her first trial. Meanwhile, the club's mountain bike team went to the latest Thetford Winter Series event, where 80 per cent of the course was thick, sticky mud. Conditions were so tough even the best riders in the two-hour event only managed three laps, where they had completed four or five in earlier races. Paul Rennie was the club's top finisher, coming in eighth position in the 18-39 age category.
