Cromwell Lake CONDITIONS were not easy with a gusty gale force wind making catching difficult for many of the anglers in Saturday's first qualifying match in this seasons series. Father and son Steve and Ricky Ashwell have for several years been the most successful anglers at the venue and were again the anglers to beat with Steve, drawn on peg nine, catching nine tench to weigh in 36lb. Ricky caught mainly carp from peg 13 for second and Ian Benton was again in third place. RESULT: 1 Steve Ashwell GOT Baits 36lb, 2 Ricky Ashwell GOT Baits 33lb 5oz, 3 Ian Benton VDE Stanjay MG 9lb 9oz, 4 Terry Allgood Cromwell 1lb 5oz. Ramsey AS A COLD gusty wind made fishing difficult for the 16 anglers present at Sunday's Open match. There were lots of very small fish to be caught but nothing bonus apart from one angler. Andrew Kilby, drawn on peg two, landed seven lovely tench plus his small fish, which gave him a winning weight of more than 30lb. His brother Paul was second and Stanjay's Mark Dickerson came third. The two sections were won by George Coles and John Steels. RESULT: 1 Andrew Kilby Ramsey 30lb 8oz, 2 Paul Kilby Ramsey 8lb 3oz, 3 Mark Dickerson Ramsey 7lb 9oz. Benwick AC BURTONS Bank did not produce any high weights, with Ted Seeby winning Sunday's match when his 1lb 7oz was helped by a rudd of just over a pound. Jim Ayres was second and Dick Denson came third. RESULT: 1 Ted Seeby 1lb 7oz, 2 Jim Ayres 12.5oz, 3 Dick Denson 11oz. Grahams Pond THE first King of the Pond qualifying match of the year was close to being abandoned with the gusty gale force wind making some of the pegs impossible to fish. Terry Kelly resumed where he left off last year - in winning form - with 4lb 13oz of rudd and skimmers. Pat Magallones was second and Steve Webb came third with all of the anglers finding maggot the best bait on the day. RESULT: 1 Terry Kelly 4lb 13oz, 2 Pat Magallones 3lb, 3 Steve Webb 1lb 10oz. St Neots AS LAST Saturday's match was fished at Lawn Farm and was won by Dennis Holliday with 4lb 14oz. Chris Young and Bob Gill took the minor places. RESULT: 1 Dennis Holliday 4lb 14oz, 2 Chris Young 3lb 6oz, 3 Bob Gill 2lb 10oz. Lawn Farm THERE are two results from open matches last week. On Sunday the match was held on Honeysuckle Lake and was won by S Thorne with 68lb of carp barbel and bream. A Leroy was second with 30lb and Simon Easy came third with 16lb 6oz. RESULT: 1 S Thorne 68lb, 2 A Leroy 30lb 8oz, 3 Simon Easy 16lb 6oz. The Golden Rod match was fished in very windy conditions on Willow Lake. The winner was Derek Kendrew from Baldock with 17lb 9oz. Dennis Holliday was second and Keith West came third. RESULT: 1 Derek Kendrew Baldock 17lb 9oz, 2 Dennis Holliday Biggleswade 12lb 4oz, 3 Keith West St Neots 9lb 4oz. Pleasure Fishing JOHN McAngus, from Godmanchester, spends many hours in search of specimen perch and tench. A lifetime dream was realised for him on Saturday when fishing a notoriously difficult stretch of the Upper Ouse near Buckingham when he caught a remarkable 4lb 11oz perch. The monster took several small worms in a swim well baited with worm and caster. John and long-time angling mate John Austerfield, from Yorkshire, had started their campaign at dawn and it was not until 5pm that the perch was caught. John first caught a two pound perch in 1962 and his previous record was a 3lb 13oz fish from the Flood Park at Haverhill in 1985.
