Skipper Jack Lewsley lifted the trophy after the win in Cambridge’s own backyard and Stags were even more impressive – in their first final appearance – given that they did it without prolific try scorer James Harris.

The outstanding George Furbank put in another man-of-the-match display at 10, and it was his pass that gave wing Stan Smith space to run for the corner.

He was held up just short, but the ball was recycled and a couple of drives from the forwards ended up with Xavier Parker burrowing over for the try, which Furbank converted to make it 7-0.

There was a slight scare for the Stags when the influential Furbank was injured and, while he was receiving treatment off the pitch, Cambridge scored and converted to make it 7-7.

But the irrepressible fly-half dusted himself down and managed to breach the home defence in the second half for his side’s second try, although this time he missed the resultant conversion – before wrapping things up with a penalty.

Meanwhile, Stags U15s agonisingly missed on a place in the East Midlands League final after a gut-wrenching 15-14 semi-final defeat at Old Northamptonians.

However they can still be proud of their brave efforts, after Charlie Gabriel and Alex Marsh both scored tries, and Alex Marsh adding two conversions took them mighty close.

The U16s enjoyed a 38-5 friendly home win over Rushden and scored six tries – Adam Burgess, Mark Street, Tom Saunders, Barney West, Liam Findley and Jack Summers going over – with four of them converted by Mitchel Newman.

The minis welcomed Northampton Old Scouts to the Racecourse.

Jack Connell, Jason Graham, William Ramply, Harvey Pinkney, Austin Brennan, Luke Basham, Jace Craig, Andrew Clemens, Angus Lawrence, George Pope, Ben Ritchie and Connor Smith all scored for the U8s during three defeats and a draw during the morning.

The U9s enjoyed three straight wins over Old Scouts, with Lorcan Harbour, Will Foster-Collier, Lewis Rendall, Eddie Brand, Mark Brand and Patrick Dorrell on the scoresheet throughout.

For the U11s, it was an overall 25-10 reverse after four quarters against Old Scouts, although Ben Williams and Fraser Hutton did get over the whitewash for Stags.

And the U12s were ousted 40-30 in their game with Old Scouts

Max Oliver (2), Matthew Waring (2), Nathan Brook and debutant Adam Stevens were the scorers and there were some strong individual performances from the likes of Simon Graham.

This Sunday, the Stags minis are away at Northampton Casuals with most of the juniors sides also in action.

The club’s youth section have fixtures over the first three weekends in April before winding down for their end-of-season celebration on Sunday, May 1.
