HUNTINGDON Stags U14 fly-half George Furbank made his debut for Guinness Premiership giants Northampton Saints’ academy side last weekend.

Furbank 14, who attends Kimbolton School, has been training with the School of Rugby and progressed to the Elite Player Development Group for Franklin’s Gardens outfit Saints.

His bow came in their first game against the Independent Schools Barbarian team, which selects the best players from Independent Schools from all over the country.

However, Furbank’s day in the spotlight was cut short after just 15 minutes through injury, which he sustained when making a try-saving tackle, and Saints went on to lose the game 35-15.

But even that couldn’t dampen his mood and ultimate ambition as he said: “I was so proud to be wearing the Saints kit, it was a real honour.

“Playing for the Saints was a great experience and, one day, I would love to turn out for the senior team.”

Furbank started playing rugby at the age of four when the Stags mini and junior section first started up and, just a few days ago, inspired the U14 side to county final glory against Cambridge.

He ran the show as Stags took the trophy 15-7, scoring the crucial second try, along with a conversion and a penalty.
