St Neots chairman Mike Kearns has hailed goalscoring sensation Tom Meechan for an explosive start to his Town career.

The summer recruit is already into double figures after netting in both Southern League Premier Division games over the Bank Holiday weekend. That took his tally for the season to 10 in just seven appearances.

Meechan, snapped up in the summer after slamming in 53 goals for Godmanchester Rovers last term, struck in a 1-1 draw at Weymouth last Saturday before clinching a 2-0 derby success over Biggleswade on Bank Holiday Monday.

And Kearns admits he wouldn’t be surprised if higher-level clubs started to show an interested in Meechan and several of Saints’ other young starts.

Kearns said: “We fully expected it to take Tom half-a-season to adjust to the demands of playing at a higher level, but he has hit the ground running.

“Ten goals by the end of August is a magnificent return and Tom has showed he is a very calm finisher.

“He has also has the knack of being in the right place at the right time which makes him a natural goalscorer.

“We didn’t sign Tom merely because he scored a hell of a lot of goals for Godmanchester though. We had him scouted extensively and his all-round game produced the sort of stats we require in a player.

“It wouldn’t surprise me in the slightest if there was interest from higher-level clubs in a lot of our young players - and I include Tom in that. But they would need to be big offers to get me even slightly interested.”

Meechan fired St Neots ahead at Weymouth with a 77th minute effort, but they were pegged back with two minutes to go.

Another summer signing, Ryan Hawkins, fired his first Saints goal to set them on the way to victory against Biggleswade in a match which saw two red cards and seven cautions.

St Neots man Brett Longden and ex-Saints defender Ryan Frater were the players dismissed in the first half.

Hawkins broke the deadlock nine minutes before the break and Meechan doubled their advantage 20 minutes into the second period.

St Neots travel to early-season table-toppers Chippenham this Saturday.
