ST Neots Town will meet Blue Square Bet South side Boreham Wood in the next round of the FA Cup after despatching Peterborough Northern Star 5-0 in first round qualifying on Saturday afternoon.

Ben Mackey scored twice and Dan Jacob, Ed Adjei and Stefan Moore got the other goals in a game that St Neots breezed through, once they had put some early ‘huffing and puffing’ behind them.

Manager Iain Parr told The Hunts Post: “They came to play football which we knew they would but we were comfortable in the end.

“It was a typical cup tie with some huffing and puffing early on but we had too much for them.”

The win was the Saints’ fourth on the trot - and Parr is enthused by the club’s progression after a shaky start to their Southern League Premier Division campaign last month.

“It was important for us to move on in this competition after the good result we have had in the league,” said the manager. “We are still a little inconsistent, and we still seem to be picking and choosing our games, so it will be good to see how far we have progressed against Boreham Wood.”

After seven games in their division, Boreham Wood are fourth. The team – who are ‘Boreham Wood’ despite hailing for the town ‘Borehamwood’ – are managed by the former Arsenal forward Ian Allinson, and they are currently playing at their highest level ever.

The Hertfordshire side won promotion to the Blue Square Bet South division through the Isthmian League’s Premier Division play-offs in 2010 and St Neots will welcome them to Rowley Park on Saturday, September 22.

“It will be a test to see how far we have come,” said Parr.

The win over Peterborough Northern Star followed Tuesday night’s away win at Bedworth United, who came up with the Saints last season. Moore, Jordan Gent and Ollie Thorne were the goalscorers in that 3-1 win but Parr was forced to make a change on Saturday because Woking did not want on-loan midfielder Jay Davies cup-tied.

Jacob opened the scoring in the 11th minute against PNS but limped off the pitch with the re-occurance of an ankle on the half-hour mark and was replaced by Ed Adjei. It was Adjei who scored the second goal in the 44th minute.

That was Parr’s ‘huffing and puffing’ out of the way and in the second half St Neots were in complete control.

Mackey was unmarked when he scored number three in the 49th minute and the same player stepped up and hit home a 60th-minute penalty.

The pace dropped after that and number five came from Moore, the striker finding the net from an accute angle in the 84th minute.

Meanwhile, Davies, the Saints on-loan midfielder, could have just one game left at the club before he returns to Woking.

The 20-year-old is the son of Saints coach Andy Davies and now the club have just one Southern League game left before he is due to return to the Kingfield Stadium.

“It’s a question we have to ask,” Parr told The Hunts Post. “He hadn’t had a lot of football at Woking but has slotted in well with us and ideally we would like to keep him.”

The Saints have now won their last four games after losing the first two of their debut season in the Premier Division of the Southern League. The Saints are now sitting in fifth, just one point behind Hemel Hempstead. “It seems that anyone is capable of beating anyone in this division at the moment,” said Parr.

St Neots: Michael Duggan, Jon-Paul Duncliffe, Declan Rogers, Ollie Thorne, Jordan Gent, Arthur Lee, Lewis Hilliard, Callum Stewart (Ryan Sharman), Stefan Moore, Ben Mackey (Jack Werndly), Ben Jacob (Ed Adjei).
