It is a 660-mile round trip to Truro in Cornwall but if St Neots come back from the UK’s most southerly city with another three points on Saturday, it will all have been worth it.

The Saints have been slowly creeping up the table since Gary King and Zema Abbey became the managers at The Cozy Stadium three months ago – but another three points this weekend could see them jump as high as 11th if other results go their way.

It’s a far cry from the relegation worries of when they took over from Iain Parr. The turnaround has been dramatic but so far the team has only moved up the table in small increments. Now they are ready to rocket.

St Neots picked up four points over the weekend with a 3-0 home win against Hungerford Town on Saturday (goals from Shane Tolley, Dave Deeney and Lewis Hilliard) and a goalless draw at Redditch United on Monday.

The previous Monday the club had faced the same journey in the semi-finals of the league’s Red Insure Cup and had beaten Redditch 3-1.

“No-one wanted to do those journeys on Monday nights so to take a point and win a semi-final there was fantastic,” said King. “It was a clean sheet and a very pleasing point.”

Hilliard was rested for that one after feeling a tight hamstring in the game against Hungerford. Denney is nursing an ankle injury and won’t make the trip to Truro.

Meanwhile, Tiverton Town, from Devon and the South & West division of the Southern League, beat Hungerford 3-1 in the second semi-final of the Red Insure Cup last week.

That sets up another long trip with the final of that competition a two-legged affair,
