EATON Socon junior golfer Owen Meeds finished 35th at the Callaway Junior World Golf Championships in San Diego.

Eight-year-old Owen, who goes to Bushmead Junior School and plays at St Neots Golf Club, qualified earlier in the year by winning an event at Daventry, giving him and three other British hopefuls the chance to pit themselves against the world’s top junior golfers at the San Diego Sycuan Golf Resort.

The competition was played out over three rounds of the demanding 18-hole par-58 course, and was dominated by players from Japan and China.

Owen, whose best St Neots course score is 90 gross, produced rounds of 66, 64 and 70 to finish in the middle of the field of 78 golfers and end as the top British player.

His second round of 64 put him in the top 21 rounds on the day but he felt his performance could have been even better.

“I think my putting was a bit below my best,” said 26-handicapper Owen. “But it was a fantastic experience playing against players from other countries and also going to Torrey Pines for the opening ceremony.”
